Angie took a deep breath and looked away from her dairy. The sun was going down, she was sitting on her balcony at her parents’ house in the mountains and she was enjoying the view. The questions about life (in the previous post titled “If life is too short, why do we do these things?”) started to dance in front of her eyes. She wondered if she will ever have answers to these questions, and suddendly she smiled and remembered what one her friends always told her: “When you are about to quit, remember that you could be one step away from victory”. She also remembered that “before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony and cuuning. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach.”(Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich)

She smiled again at these thoughts and decided to go for a walk in order to show gratitude for this day that was about to end.

One question kept returning to her mind no matter how hard she tried to push it away, to ignore it or to think about something else. The question is : “If life is too short, why do we come to a frustrating unfulfilling work everyday?” She knew that she would have to fight with this thought for some time, she knew that no matter what she would do it will keep coming back until an answer is formed in her mind. From where the answer is going to come from? from within maybe? from the mind? from the heart? from somewhere else?

“If life is too short, why do we come to a frustrating unfulfilling work everyday?” So why do we do that ? Why do we come to such work?

ummm…

  • Because we think that we don’t have any other choice….
  • Because we are so close to a door that has just been closed that we think that our entire life and our entire universe is revolving around this door.
  • Because we forget that “when one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us” as Helen Keller said. (By the way, Helen Keller (1880-1968) – American author, political activist, and lecturer- was deafblind. She was the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree and she spent most of her life going from one place to another telling people about life, happiness and hope.)
  • Because someone moved our cheese.. So what? Move with your cheese.
  • Because we think that once we leave this “roof” that is keeping us from following our dreams, we will find ourselves in an unknown universe. And who would want to leave his/her comfort zone to embrace a new world of possibilities? Who would want to leave his/her “safe” known boring place, to discover new horizons? Who would want to leave his/her same old tasks to learn new things, meet new people and take new roads which seems to be foggy, unreal, and unknown? We want things to remain unchangeable and stable, and we dread and loath change. Once we open our eyes, once we take a step away from the door and once we take some distance from the current situation, we will understand that everything is changing and that nothing remains the same. So why hold on to something when we know deep down that it is fleeting?

Life is too short.. So Live it. Don’t cry over spilt milk. Don’t saw sawdust. Don’t worry about the future and don’t fuss about the past. Jesus said: “Give us this day our daily bread” and this is exactly what we need, food for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow is far away…
